Obituary for Flora Jane Whisenant

Flora Jane Whisenant was born October 20th, 1925 in Houston, Texas. She was one of 5 children born to John B Deal and Mary Gholson Deal. She is preceded in death by her siblings who she loved very much: Mary Jackson, Ruth L. Morgan, Frances Ray, and JB Deal. She was a dedicated educator and she started her first teaching job at the age of 18. She graduated from Waller HS in 1942 and received her BS in Elementary Education in 1946 and her Masters in Elementary Education in 1950 at Southwest Texas State College. At SWT she met the love of her life Norman Maurice Whisenant and they were married August 11, 1946. She worked as an elementary school teacher, early childhood educator, special education teacher and an educational diagnostician. Norman shared her passion for education and together they touched countless lives.

She was a woman of faith who loved her church family. She taught herself to play one thing on the piano, The Old Rugged Cross, and for many years she enjoyed singing in the church choir. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She lost Norman in 2016 after 69 years of marriage; she was devastated but I think she stayed with us so she could meet her great grandchild Thomas. She is survived by her daughter Linda, son Norman Jr. (Chip), son Dewey and wife Gretchen, and her son Tim and wife Michele. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Amy, Kailee, Isaac; Celeste, Luis, Russell, Maura; Grace, Hannah; Timothy Carl, Madeline and her great grandchild Thomas. She was devoted to her husband and children but her grandchildren were the light of her life. She will be greatly missed but she lives on in our hearts.

A visitation is scheduled for Friday, April 27, 2018 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Thomason Funeral Home in San Marcos. The funeral service is set for Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in San Marcos. A private burial for the family only will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the Driftwood Cemetery in Driftwood, TX. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Thomason Funeral Home, 512-396-2300, 2001 Old Ranch Road 12, San Marcos, TX, www.thomasonfuneralhome.com
