Born in Floresville, Texas
Resided in San Marcos, TX

Bennie Irene Brooks, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away at her home in San Marcos on Sunday, May 9, 2010 at the age of 84. She was born on March 7, 1926, in Floresville to Ben F. Richardson and Mary Fisher Richardson. She graduated from Sacred Heart Middle School in 1940. She married Blanton N. Brooks on January 21, 1943. He was a career Air Force enlisted man which required them to relocate to different military installations. They lived in San Antonio, Texas: Warner Robbins, Georgia; Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, and Hahn Air Force Base, Germany. The military also required them to be separated from each other for long periods of time. Blanton served two and one half years in Japan after World War II and one year I Korea in 1952. During these periods, Irene would stay with her mother on the family farm in Floresville. In 1960, upon Blanton’s retirement from the Air Force, the family moved to San Marcos. Upon Blanton’s death in 1978, she continued to live at their home on Franklin Drive. Irene was a faithful member of St. John’s Catholic Church and a member of the Claretian Guild. Although disabled for several years, Irene did her best to care for her friends and neighbors. For a while she used to drive some of her lady friends to church every Sunday. She loved to bake for her family and neighbors. Her specialties were chocolate gooey cake and banana bread. She took a special joy and delight in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as the myriad of pictures around her house will attest. There was seldom a birthday or a graduation that someone was not receiving one of her $2.00 bills in the mail. She is survived by her son, Don Brooks and wife, Joan of San Antonio; daughter, Bonnie Brooks of Beaumont; son Patrick Brooks of San Marcos; sister Mildred Hamm of Victoria; three grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Services are pending. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. John’s Catholic Church, in San Marcos, Texas.
