Harold James Brodrick, Jr, 81, of Wimberley passed away on Wednesday, August 1st in Austin. He was born in Newport News, VA on July 18, 1931 to Harold James Brodrick, Sr and Vivian Vera Venables Brodrick. Mr. Brodrick's father was a Naturalist with the National Park Service and he grew up in various National Parks, including Washington's Birthplace, VA, Yellowstone National Park, WY, Carlsbad Caverns, NM, and Petrified Forest, AZ.
Harold was Valedictorian of Holbrook H.S. in Holbrook, AZ Class of 1949. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Geophysics from Kansas State University in 1953, graduated Magna Cum Laude with a MS in Meteorology from Florida State University and further post-graduate work in Mathematics at the University of Maryland.
Mr. Brodrick served as a First Lt in the US Air Force as a weather officer for the SAC and then as a civilian weather officer attached to the Army at Dugway Army Proving Grounds, Dugway, UT. He made his career as a Research Meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration researching the use of satellite data for weather forecasting and was instrumental in developing the technology for tracking the Jet Stream. He was part of the scientific group for Skylab. He was published in scientific journals and received multiple honors for his research including several entries in the Who's Who of American Scientists.
He had a lifelong interest in choral music and was active in many choral groups, including the Kansas State University A Cappella Choir and many church choirs, often as a soloist. He was a church deacon, a Past Master of the Wimberley Masonic Lodge, and an active member of the Wimberley Lions Club and the Chapel in the Hills.
Mr. Brodrick is survived by his loving wife of almost 59 years, Della Dean Cornett Brodrick. They were married September 6, 1953. He is survived by one son, Kenneth Scott Brodrick of Austin, TX; four grand-children, Ian Scott Brodrick of Bandera, TX, Mallory Jodon Brodrick of Lubbock, TX, Collin Kneale Brodrick of Houston, TX and Christina Rose Madden Brodrick of Austin; three great-children, Joel Andrew Brodrick, Hannah Leigh Brodrick and Maryann Ruth Brodrick; and one sister, Joyce Diane Brodrick Feir of Davidson, NC.
A celebration of Mr. Brodrick's life will be held on Saturday, August 11th, 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel in the Hills, Wimberley, TX. After the reception, a private family interment will be held at the Wimberley Cemetery.
