Obituary

Herbert Edmund Bateman, D.D.S., 89, passed away on Monday, March 12, 2012, at the Central Texas Medical Center. Herbert was born July 17, 1922, in Houston, Texas to Earle Wise Bateman and Edmonia Chedville Bateman. He attended San Jacinto High School in Houston, and graduated in May, 1940. He attended the University of Houston and the University of Texas School of Dentistry. He married Jayne Catherine Howard on May 6, 1944 in Houston, and raised four children. After graduating from dental school, he served three years as a Navy dentist in San Diego. He tried a civilian private dental practice for two years in Houston, but then rejoined the military and began a long career in the Air Force Dental Corps, where he was able to explore and develop his interest in oral surgery, eventually becoming Base Dental Surgeon at his last four duty stations. He was stationed at Carswell AFB, Fort Worth, and at Tachikawa AFB, Yokota AFB, and Johnson AFB in Japan in the 1950's. From there he went to Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota and on to Kindley AFB, Bermuda, and Ent AFB, Colorado in the 1960's. He volunteered for a tour of duty at Korat AFB, Thailand during the Vietnam War. He then transferred to Goodfellow AFB, San Angelo, Texas where he retired from the Air Force. He moved to Wimberley, TX with his wife, Jayne, in 1977, where he built a house on seven acres of beautiful Texas Hill County. He spent his time maintaining the property and entertaining friends and relatives. Herb loved animals. He loved boats, and anything having to do with the water: swimming, fishing, water skiing, parasailing, snorkeling, scuba diving. He loved seafood, especially raw oysters and crabs. He was an expert poker player and could have earned a living playing poker if he had wanted. He enjoyed photography, reading and the outdoors, and was tireless on his outdoors projects. Herb is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Jayne; by his brother, Courtenay. Survivors include: Brother, Earle W. Bateman, Jr.; son, Herbert, Jr. and his wife Kathleen; son, Kenneth, and his wife Cathleen; daughter, Courtenay Harre, and her husband, David and son, Kyle. Grandchildren, Adam, and his wife, Jeni; Elissa Martin, and her husband, Jarrod; Rebecca; Elizabeth; Kyle, Jr., and wife Mirjam; Samantha; and 8 great-grandchildren.
