Hermelinda H. Acosta, a resident of San Marcos, went to be with her Heavenly Father, September 21, 2009 at the age of 82. She was born December 20, 1926 to Vicente and Maria Hernandez. She was married for 51 years to her husband Antonio G. Acosta who preceded her in death January 5, 1997.
Hermelinda was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church and was an active member of the Archicofradia and American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. At age 16 she worked as a seamstress during World War II sewing military uniforms. As a seamstress, she was able to sew any garment without a pattern and recreate clothing from a picture. She married her husband February 20, 1946. She was a housewife that raised her children and grandchildren. She taught them dignity, the value of an education, and instilled in them her faith and strong Catholic belief. She cared for and raised many children from infancy to school age at her home for many years.
She is survived by her children, Flo A. Velasquez and her husband James, Tony Acosta, Jr. and his wife Lupe G., Gilbert Acosta and his wife Gloria, Liz Vargas and her husband Johnny, Jeannie Pavia and her husband James, Richard Acosta and his wife Ramona, Michael Acosta and his wife Janette; and infant son, Jesse Acosta, who passed away in 1961. She is also survived by grandchildren, Greg Velasquez, Melanie Weedman, Stephanie Kennedy, Agnes Acosta, Lisa Acosta, Becky Russell, John Eric Vargas, Jason Pavia, Jared Pavia, Alexis Acosta, Elizabeth Acosta, Derek Acosta, Zach Acosta, Ethan Acosta, Celeste Acosta, Jesse Acosta; great grandchildren, Ilyssa Velasquez, Marissa Velasquez, Jesse James Velasquez, Nathan Russell, Charlie Russell, Justin Russell, Alicia Vargas, John Eric Vargas, Jr.; 4 brothers, Fidel Hernandez, Arturo Hernandez, David Hernandez, and Gabriel Hernandez; and 3 sisters, Came Garcia, Tencha Rodriguez, Terry Pacheco.
A rosary will be recited at St. John’s Catholic Church Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be held at St. John’s Catholic Church Thursday, September 24 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Memory Lawn Memorial Park, Martindale. The services will be officiated by Father Enrique Diaz.
