Maria T. “Mere” Torres passed away Wednesday, May 12th at her home in Hunter, TX. She was born in San Marcos, TX to Maximino & Isabel Torres on August 15, 1937 and grew up in Hunter, TX. Although she never had children of her own, at the age of 12, she took on the role of a mother to her siblings. While they were all migrant workers, she continued her role as a mother while they worked in fields. In 1970, she became her father’s caregiver until he passed in 1992. She also raised her nephew, great-nephew, and nieces. Mere was a strong-willed and selfless woman, who always put everyone’s needs before her own, even at the time of her death.
Mere was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Reno “Neo” Torres, and sister, Angela Vela. She is survived by her brothers, Jesus T. Torres, Ignacio T. Torres, Paul T. Torres, and Max T. Torres all of Hunter, TX; sisters, Leonor Mercado of Buda, TX, Anita Martinez of Austin, TX; niece, Helen Castilleja of New Braunfels, TX, nephew, Jesse “Chuy” Torres, niece, Isabel Davila, and nephew, Chris “Goldie” Lozano all of Hunter, TX, and numerous other, nieces and nephews.
Friends may call on the family at the Thomason Funeral Home in San Marcos from 4-7 p.m. today. The Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 15th, 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hunter, TX. Rev. Fr.
