Obituary

Norman Maurice Whisenant was born on May 12, 1922, in Driftwood, Texas. He was one of 11 children, born to Richard and Vesta Whisenant. He spent his youth in the Rio Grande Valley, where his family farmed for a living. He enlisted in the US Navy during WWII, and served as an air traffic controller. After WWII, he enrolled in Southwest Texas State College, where he received his BS in Education and his MA in Educational Administration. During his time in college he met and married Flora Jane Deal. They both pursued careers in the field of education which they had a passion for. He taught in Beeville, San Antonio, Austin and New Braunfels as a teacher, an assistant principal, a principal, a curriculum director, and for many years Superintendent of Schools for Comal Independent School District. He also loved his church family and was a deacon at First Baptist Church San Marcos and First Baptist Church Wimberley for many years. He loved working on projects at the church. He was an avid organic gardener for years, supplying vegetables for all his friends and family. We will all miss those!

He was also a devoted husband and father and grandfather. He left us all with good memories. Norman Maurice Whisenant passed away on April 12, 2016 at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife Flora, his daughter Linda, and son Norman Jr.(Chip), his son Dewey and wife Gretchen, and his son Tim and wife Michele. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren: Amy, Celeste, Russell, Gracie, Hannah, Carl and Madeline and one great grandchild, Thomas. He was a great man. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.

A visitation is scheduled for Friday, April 15, 2016 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Thomason Funeral Home in San Marcos.
