Jose Jesus Vasquez “Popo”, 74, of San Marcos, was called to be with our heavenly father on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous fight against cancer.
Popo is survived by his loving wife, constant companion, and faithful care-giver of 54 years, Epifania Torres Vasquez. He is also survived by his seven children, Magdalena Gallegos (Husband Paul), Irma Villanueva (Husband Refugio), Della Smith (Husband Scott) David Vasquez (Wife Sarah) Norma Madrigal (Husband Manuel) Daniel Vasquez (Wife Claudia), and John Paul Vasquez (Fiancé Alexis); 23 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. He also leaves behind four brothers, Fidel Vasquez (Wife Dora), Guadalupe Vasquez (Wife Ramona), Salvador Vasquez (Wife Margie), and Mike Vasquez (Wife Irene). He is preceded in death by his parents, Augustine Vasquez Sr. and Juanita Vasquez of San Marcos, and brother Augustine Vasquez Jr.
Mr. Vasquez’ life could be described in these few words: Faithful to God, loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, Texas Longhorn for life, and San Antonio food and music fan. These few words describe how he found enjoyment in life, but no words can convey the positive impact he left on the people whose lives he touched. He always liked to talk about the time he and his family spent working as migrant workers in West Texas. He said those were times of sacrifice, but they were also some of the best times in his life. He worked for Wide-Lite in San Marcos, and retired after 40 years of employment. He made lasting friendships with his co-workers, and always had funny stories to share. He was a simple man, who never wanted anything for himself, but found great joy in seeing his family grow, and spend time together. His love for San Antonio took his family down IH 35 South as a weekly trip, and often more than once a week. He enjoyed blaring Conjunto music in the car as the family would travel the streets of San Antonio. This was a weekly tradition that carried on to his grandchildren. Mr. Vasquez also had a strong faith in God, and never failed to pray every single day. It was amazing to hear all of the names of the people he prayed for without fail on a daily basis. In faith, he was a great role model and instilled a love for God in all of his family. He will be missed dearly, but never forgotten, especially by his first grandson Phillip Michael Gallegos, and best friend Manuel Madrigal Jr.
The Vasquez family would greatly like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to Dr. Landon Smith, Dr. Sherri Grimm, all the nurses, staff, and doctors at Texas Oncology, Fresenius Kidney Care of San Marcos, Dr. William Rogers, The late Dr. Thomas Castoldi, Central Texas Medical Center, Kindred Hospice, St. John’s Catholic Church, Austin Radiological Association, St. David South Austin Medical Center, and La Sociedad De La Buena Voluntad of Hunter, TX.
