Obituary

Roseta (Rose) Ponce Torres, 71, was called to eternal rest on the beautiful fall morning of October 24, 2017. She was surrounded by her children, family and friends, as she began her journey to perpetual life.

An adored Matriarch, she is survived by her son Chris Arredondo (Joey Funke); son Frank A. Arredondo (Cynthia Jasso Arredondo); and, daughter Kristal Rose Arredondo (David Daniel Ybarra). An adored "Nani," she will be missed dearly by her grandchildren Caden Arredondo, Layla Arredondo, Evan Arredondo and Alex Arredondo; and, her grand-pets at the EIEIO Ranch.

Rose is preceded in death by her beloved parents Gabriel and Ruperta Torres; her eldest sister Rosa Torres Barron and brother Lorenzo Torres. Her surviving siblings are Amelia Torres Cruz (Gilbert Cruz); Tirso Torres (Olivia Torres+); Frances Torres Castillo (Manuel Castillo); and, Dominga Torres Martinez (Richard Martinez). She leaves numerous nieces and nephews on the Torres and Arredondo sides of the family, who were touched deeply by her loving and caring ways.

Born in Hunter (La Mota), Texas, she was a lifetime resident of San Marcos.

Rose is remembered for her vibrant and joyous spirit and she leaves a legacy of humility, sweetness, kindness and generosity. She retired recently after serving the San Marcos School District for 26 years and making enduring friendships with teachers and touching the lives of children at Bowie and Hernandez Elementary Schools, Goodnight Jr. High and at the Phoenix Academy at Lamar School campus.

In previous years, she owned Total Hair Fashions, a beauty salon in downtown San Marcos, and always remained true to her lifetime passion of helping women of all ages feel beautiful and coiffed, whether in her hair salon or at Jo's Hair Designs, and in recent years at Stone Brook Beauty Salon. She also worked for several years as a realtor at Red Carpet Realty.

Her love of life, her childlike curiosity and girlish glee made her a true friend to everyone who met her. She brought immense sweetness and beauty to the world with her expert baking abilities and her mouth-watering Coconut Cream, Pumpkin and Pecan pies. Friends and family looked forward to Holiday festivities knowing Aunt Rose would delight all with her amazing Peach cobbler, Easter bunny cakes, and Butter Scotch Bars. She was loved as a "House Mom" at San Marcos Fire Station No. 1, often bringing homemade desserts and Enchiladas to fire fighters after tough assignments. Her creativity also inspired, as her home brought the welcoming light and inspiration of the holidays to her family and friends.

Most of all, Rose loved her children and grandchildren. They were the center of her universe and she gave them immense love, tender care and support, and unlimited encouragement. She was their North Star helping navigate and buffer the visiccitudes of life. And, her presence in their lives will be dearly missed.

Her legacy is the peace, love and joy of God. And, those who crossed her path have also known the grace of God.

Her family will receive friends at Thomason Funeral Home in San Marcos this Monday, October 30, 2017 from 4:00 PM through 9:00 PM, with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held the following morning at Saint John’s Catholic Church in San Marcos, beginning at 10:00 AM, prior to interment at the San Marcos City Cemetery.
