Lillie Vasquez Ruiz died peacefully on January 21, 2018 at the age of 90 of Alzheimer’s, a disease she has lived with and battled with courage and determination for over 2 years. She was born September 12, 1927 in nearby Staples Texas to Jose and Juanita Vasquez. Lillie was one of eight children.

She and her family moved to San Marcos in the early 1940’s and was one of a few Mexican Americans to graduate from San Marcos High School in 1948. Weeks after graduation, she married the late Ruben Ruiz, Sr. Lillie and Ruben were the first couple in San Marcos to celebrate their marriage with a wedding dance at Cuauhtémoc Hall beginning a tradition that is still popular today. Her love of dancing continued throughout her active life and we find comfort knowing she is now dancing in heaven. Together they raised seven children. Lillie was a devoted wife and mother. She supported her husband Ruben throughout his political career for over 40 years.

Lillie enjoyed immensely her work as a teacher’s assistant in the San Marcos School District. In addition, her involvement with her children was always a priority from little league to piano lessons, to PTA meetings, to Religious classes.

A volunteer in the community for over 50 years, she was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, The Archicofradia of St John’s, The Bereavement Ministry of St. John’s Catholic Church, American G. I Forum Women, Centro Cultural Hispano Amigas, and hospital volunteer at CTMC for over 20 years.

She is survived by daughters Rosina Ruiz Valle (David) and Rhea Ruiz Kimbell (David); sons Ruben Ruiz (Amanda), Roland Ruiz (Marie), Rene Ruiz (Diane), Rodney Ruiz, and Robert Ruiz; five grandchildren Richard Ruiz, Raquel Ruiz Maldonado, David Rene Valle, Jonathan Ruiz, and Cristina Ruiz; two great- grandchildren Raelyn Maldonado and Michael Allen Maldonado; sister Susie Molina (Arnold) of Fort Worth; brother-in-law Robert Ruiz (Jeanette); sister-in-law Hilda Barrera (Bobby) of Kyle T; and sister-in-law Toni Vasquez of San Marcos; many nieces, nephews, cousins, god children and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Juanita Vasquez; husband, Ruben Ruiz, Sr.; son Mario Gerardo Ruiz; brothers Joe Vasquez, Willie Vasquez, Mike Vasquez and Richard Vasquez; sisters Beatrice Rosales and Elida Rodriquez.

Funeral Arrangements are under the direction of Thomason Funeral Home.
