Michael John DeBow, 67, went to his heavenly home on March 11th, 2018, after a valiant battle with leukemia. He passed away peacefully at home in San Marcos surrounded by his family. His firm belief in God and devotion to his family supported him through his struggle and gave him peace.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Mary Alice; children, Faith DeBow, Joy (Brian) Mascari, and Tim (Jill) DeBow; five grandchildren; mother, Trudy DeBow; brothers, Marc DeBow and Matt DeBow; and sisters, Nina Darrington, Kathy Gillard, and Carmelia Johnson. He was preceded in death by his father, George William DeBow.
Michael was born October 8th, 1950 in Sisseton, South Dakota. He graduated from high school in Deadwood, South Dakota, and was accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point where he was heavily involved in the Glee Club.
He graduated from West Point on June 6th, 1973, and served with distinction in the Army Corps of Engineers for thirty years, receiving numerous awards including the Legion of Merit. After retirement from the Army as a Colonel in 2003, he worked as the Associate Director of Project Management at the University of Texas at Austin until retirement in 2016.
Michael was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. He had a lifelong hobby of woodworking and created many custom projects and pieces of furniture for his family and friends. He loved music, attending hundreds of concerts in his lifetime. A faithful Christian, he was very involved in service to his church and focused his life on serving God and others.
Visitation will take place at Thomason Funeral Home, 2001 Old Ranch Road 12, San Marcos, TX, from 4:00-7:00 PM on Friday, March 16th, 2018. A celebration of life service will be held at Three Rivers Community Church, 103 Main Street, Martindale, TX, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 17th, 2018. The family invites you to share lunch and memories immediately following the service.
