On March 11, 1940, Donald Wayne Ash was born to Oscar and Chloe Ash in Azle, Texas. He passed away surrounded by his family on March 20, 2018. He lived life with gusto and purpose and died at the age of 78 the same way.
He was an accomplished wood worker, craftsman, and general handyman. This multitalented man warmed hearts whether he was telling a joke, making a speech, or leading a family prayer. He was a lover of motorcycles, classic cars, collecting pipes, but loved his family most of all. His gentle spirit prayed every day for family and friends.
Don met the love of his life, Barbara Jones, while she was working in the lunch line at Howard Payne University. He worked hard to build a life for them, sweeping floors in a shirt factory, as a bank teller, as a computer engineer at Texaco, as a commercial real estate agent, and finally in executive management at Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. He could not wait to retire and build his bride (as he always called her) their dream home in Wimberley. Barbara said “every day for 57 years, this man told me he loved me and made me laugh.” What a beautiful legacy.
Don is survived by his wife, Barbara Ash. His first born son and pride of his life, Kevin Ash of The Woodlands, Texas and his three children, Savannah Ash, age 21, Wesley & William, age 7. His daughter, whom he called the jewel in his crown, Penny Westberry, her husband Phil Westberry and their two children, Reagan age 16, Marshall age 14. Two brothers, Ray Ash and his wife Rita of Mason, Texas; Larry Ash and his wife Kala of Weatherford, Texas. Sister in-law Lisa and Tim Dodson of Wimberley, TX. Numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
