Obituary for CDR William N. Malone, USN, RET.

CDR William “Bill” Nicholas Malone, USN, Retired, (formerly of Westport, CT) died peacefully in his Wimberley home on Sunday, June 23rd, 2019, following a brief illness. He was surrounded by his family when he entered the presence of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Bill was 84 years old.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Carole Anne Malone; children, Candace Malone Waldee (Tim) of Franklin Park, PA, and Joe Malone (Trish) of Wimberley; and grandchildren, Carolyn, Ben, Grace, and Noah Waldee; and Ella, Jack, and Hope Malone. He is also survived by his sister, Marjorie FitzMorris of Ridge, NY and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Lucy Malone, brother Joseph Malone, and daughter, Kirsten Anne Malone.
Bill was born on May 3rd, 1935 in Jamaica, Queens, NY. As the son of a NYC Fire Department Chief, Bill developed a strong desire for service, resulting in his enrollment in Officer’s Candidate School and subsequent commission as a Naval officer following his graduation from Fordham University. He served as a supply officer on the S.S. Mauna Loa ammunition ship and later on a minesweeper. Bill’s favorite aspect of Navy life was serving with fine officers and sailors from all over the country; his least favorite was when chicken was served aboard the ship, which lead to a lifelong aversion to poultry. Bill’s service in the USN (both Active Duty and Reserves) spanned 39 years.
During his civilian career, Bill’s titles included Financial Operations Manager and Investment Director of the NYNEX Corporation, in Manhattan, NY. He was a talented and distinguished businessman.
Christian service was a lifelong passion for Bill. He served for many years as the Head Usher at St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church in Westport, CT. The legacy of his example continues to impact his children and grandchildren in their desire to serve the Lord.
Bill was also known for his gourmet cooking. Beyond signature family dinners of spaghetti and meatballs with homemade sauce and roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, Bill’s culinary endeavors extended to directing the annual St. Luke’s picnic and Men’s Dinner, working in the local soup kitchen, and cooking for the Staples High School Gridiron Club (Westport).
Visitation will be held at Thomason Funeral Home in Wimberley from 5:00 – 8.00 p.m. Thursday, June 27th. A funeral mass is scheduled for Friday, June 28th, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s in Wimberley, with a reception to follow at the church. All are welcome.
The family would like to thank Wimberley Home Health, Angels for Elders, and Kindred Hospice for their love and care of Bill during his final months.
