Obituary for Luis A. Bernal

After an extremely tough fight, Luis A. Bernal, also known as “Louie” or, “Tico,” lost his battle to cancer on Sunday, September 1, 2019 at the young age of 48. He was born in Medellin, Colombia on March 29, 1971 to Maria V. Ospina and Luis Alberto Bernal, Sr. Arriving to the United States at the age of 18 months, he grew up in a loving family with two sisters in Paterson, NJ. He graduated high school at Paterson Catholic and shortly after joined the US Army. He soon met his first wife, Patricia Perez, and they married on November 13, 1992. They had two daughters and soon moved to their new life in Texas. He was welcomed with open arms by so many, and officially became a “Texan.”

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Lisandro Bernal and brother in law, Sammy Perez.

Survivors include his daughters, Aria and Maya Bernal; grandson, Rowan A. Galvan; parents, Maria V. and Luis A. Bernal; sisters, Jennifer Ramirez, Viviana Negron and in-laws, Katie and Domingo Perez; as well as numerous extended relatives and many friends.

Louie maintained his bright smile, humor and great personality despite his battle with cancer. His family is grateful that he was able to travel to Aruba and walk his sister, Viviana, down the aisle at her wedding. He was able to travel to Rome, Italy and witness his youngest daughter, Maya, get engaged. He was by his eldest daughter, Aria’s side during the delivery of his first grandson Rowan (AKA Rolex). He will be missed immensely by all that knew and loved him. Though his body is no longer physically with us, he will live on forever through the memories he left behind.

Visitation will be held at the Thomason Funeral Chapel on Thursday, September 5, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with Words of Remembrance to be held at 7:00 p.m. Visiting hours will continue Friday, September 6, 2019 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Family and friends will ride in formal procession to the Reception that will be held at the Cuauhtemoc Hall (1100 Patton Street) from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life gathering will follow at the I Don’t Know Bar (650 E. Hopkins Street).

Riding was life for Louie, it was his therapy, and he rode until the very end.

“The road goes on forever and the party never ends.”
